What is Core Aeration & How Does it Help Your Lawn?

Core aeration is a process where a machine is run over your lawn to create small holes within the lawn. By doing this, it allows key nutrients like air, light, and water to reach areas of the soil and grass roots that otherwise would not get access to those nutrients.

In turn, the grass roots are able to grow deeper into the soil and create a strong, well-established lawn. Core aeration also helps to alleviate compacted soil. Soil becomes compacted with heavy foot traffic and makes it difficult for those nutrients to move around within the soil.

How Often & When Lawns Should be Aerated

Lawns benefit the most from aeration when it is performed annually. This allows for any compacted soil to be loosened again and roots to receive more nutrients. In our area of Massachusetts, it’s best to aerate lawns in the fall. We at Gatsby Grounds Company start aeration services around the beginning of September and stop around the beginning of October. With over 20 years of lawn care experience, we’ve determined that this is the best time to aerate for lawns to receive maximum benefits.

If your property receives heavy foot traffic, such as playgrounds, golf courses, municipal parks, or others, the lawn will benefit immensely from aeration.

What Happens After Your Lawn Is Aerated

Lawn in Westford covered in plugs from aeration.

After aeration, there will be small plugs of soil and grass left on your lawn. Keeping these on your lawn is beneficial, as the plugs tend to break down and become a part of your lawn again in about a week. Within this same timeframe, you should begin to see grass roots fill up the holes that were left behind. This signifies that the roots are getting those key nutrients needed to grow stronger. We also typically put down more grass seed after aeration services in order to encourage more grass growth within your lawn.
