Keeping your lawn at optimal health is a delicate balance and when that balance gets thrown off, your lawn can become more susceptible to diseases and insect infestations.
When disease or insects attack your lawn in Lunenburg, Leominster, Concord, and nearby Massachusetts communities such as Westford and Lincoln, there are steps that can be taken to address those issues.
In our area of Massachusetts, there are a few common lawn diseases that can arise if the grass isn’t fortified enough to fight them off. When grass and soil don’t have the right balance of nutrients, they are weaker and disease finds its opportunity to strike.
A common lawn disease we see here in Lunenburg and nearby areas is red thread. Red thread tends to pop up around spring or early summer and thrives in moist environments. It’s usually linked to a low pH or lack of nutrients and fertilizer in the lawn and soil.
Red thread can be treated with a custom fertilization plan to encourage healthy grass growth.
Another disease that can strike newly seeded lawns is pythium. Pythium tends to manifest in the summer in humid conditions. It looks like cobwebs when it appears in a lawn. This disease can be treated with fungicide applications.
At Gatsby Grounds Company, we can help treat these lawn diseases with custom plans to fight them. If you are part of our lawn care program, we will treat lawn diseases as part of that program.
A major problem for lawns in Massachusetts is the white grub. Grubs are the larvae of beetles and eat the roots of your grass as they develop, leading to patches of dead grass throughout your lawn. Applying preventative grub control is the most efficient way to control these pests in your yard. We generally apply this treatment in June or July as a part of our full lawn care program.
If you see grub issues arise after we apply a preventative treatment, we will come back out for no charge to apply another treatment. If you’re not part of our lawn care program and suspect that your lawn may have a grub infestation, we can apply a grub curative for your grass that will help to kill them before they cause too much damage.
Other insects that can cause issues in your lawn include chinch bugs and sod webworms. Chinch bugs suck out the juice from grass blades during the summer and cause the grass in those areas to die. Sod webworms eventually turn into moths, but during their caterpillar stage, they feed on the grass. They are active in spring and should be treated when they are smaller for treatment to be most effective.
